To grow, we need to continually take on new experiences. “25 years experience” is really no better than a few years if you did the same things over and over again. Aim for at least 25% new experiences each year. Even if you are in the same position, take on something new—new responsibilities, new activities, new skills, new customers, new territory.

Step Up

If your current role doesn’t give you room for this, pursue new experience outside it as a volunteer. Most of the time, you only need to be willing to step up!

Add Experience

Consider ways you can add to your professional “bag of tricks” by taking on new and different experiences. What could you do to:

  • Start something
  • Create new revenue source
  • Fix something
  • Solve a problem
  • Do something different
  • Participate on a cross-functional team
  • Lead a project
  • Lead a change
  • Take a calculated risk
  • Lead an outside project
  • Experience a different culture
  • Innovate

All of these are ways that can help you continue to grow and build a stand-out professional portfolio.

What new experiences will you pursue this year?
